For our final event until fall, we have a special speaker, topic, location, and time/date! We already have lots of responses so be sure to RSVP right away if you haven’t done so already. You may know that Dean Chemerinsky is soon leaving the area to become the Dean of the University of California Berkeley School of Law. This may be one of the last chances to hear him speak in this area.

Events are heating up quickly in Washington. Does the chaos we are witnessing reveal an erosion of our laws, democratic traditions, and constitutional rights? Is the Constitution being violated and if so, what is the remedy? Will Professor Chemerinsky be successful in his lawsuit vs. President Trump? We are fortunate to have him join us before he leaves to become the new Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law on July 1st. Professor Chemerinsky received his law degree from Harvard and is now considered one of the country’s leading experts on constitutional law. He has authored ten books including The Case Against the Supreme Court (Viking, 2014) and most recently Closing the Courthouse Doors: How Your Constitutional Rights Became Unenforceable (Yale University Press, 2017). If you own a copy, bring it along for a signing! He has written more than 200 law review articles and many know him from his regular Op-Ed column in the Orange County Register. In January of this year, National Jurist named him as the most influential person in legal education in the United States.

SOCP will provide the coffee but we are relying on you for pot-luck style contributions of finger food, snacks, and cookies. If you would care to bring something, please let us know when you RSVP (if you haven’t done so already) so we can set up before hand. St. Andrews is easily accessed from the I-5 in San Clemente from either the Vista Hermosa or the Pico exit. Here is a link to a map:

Please visit our Web Site www.socprogressives.com for updates about events in the area, a photo gallery of past events, and commentary on the news. This month there is commentary on Trump’s first 100 days, his war on science and the media, his insults to women, and the winners and losers in the new Republican health care plan. You can also read about endocrine disrupters, the Googlefication of education, new discoveries about sunlight and mood, and disturbing news about the craft beer and fishing industries plus the deluge of plastic waste in the arctic. But what news would be complete without an update about the Trump women, why there are no pets n the White House, where billionaires are moving, who is filling the swamp, and 34 new Republican standards for political conduct. On the lighter side, did you know that there are mastodonians in San Diego? And finally, enjoy some juicy Letters to the Editor.
